Benmore Botanic Garden

Seven miles north of Dunoon on the A815 lies the jewel in the crown that is Benmore Botanic Gardens. In 1925 Harry George Younger gifted the entire estate of Benmore to the nation. Benmore is now one of the four gardens of the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh (RBGE) which together make up the National Botanic Gardens of Scotland. Together the four gardens grow more than 15,500 plant species, making this the second richest collection of its kind in the world.

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE BENMORE’S EVENT DIARY

Visitors enter the Gardens through the great Redwood Avenue planted in 1863 by Piers Patrick a wealthy American who bought the estate in 1862.

All 120 acres are presently undergoing a survey.

The James Duncan Cafe serves teas, coffees, snacks and light meals to the visitors. The cafe is open to non-visitors and makes a very pleasant place to call for a meal anytime.

Scots pine dating back to 1820 still grow on the hillside above Benmore house. Curator Peter Baxter here is between the eldest trees in Benmore.

Benmore receives between 80 inches and 120 inches of rainfall a year. The result is rapid growth and a rich variety of plants.

The garden is open daily 1 March to 31 October 10am to 6pm (5pm in March and October) The adjacent shop sells cards, book and gifts as well as a range of plants.
