CAMPAIGNS Knife Crime

The vast majority of people will never experience knife crime firsthand. But for a small minority of young people, the concept of putting a knife in their pocket before they go out is all too familiar.
Young people who carry a blade are literally living on a knife-edge. While they may not actually intend to use the knife, they are putting themselves in a position where they could potentially kill someone. Even if you only intend to hurt someone, the reality is that a single stab wound can be fatal.

The vast majority of knife incidents in the West of Scotland take place in urban areas, involving young men aged between 16 and 25. However, in some areas, teenage girls have been caught carrying knives in their handbags for their boyfriends, in the belief that they won’t be searched. In a pioneering move, police officers are using hand-held metal detectors to seek out hidden weapons.
Strathclyde Police is working hard to change attitudes towards the carrying of knives. Thankfully, knife possession and knife crime is not as prevalent in Cowal as in some other areas. If you know someone who carries a knife, please contact Dunoon Police Office on 01369 763000 , or telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where you can pass on the information anonymously.
