Having heard of their growing reputation and listened to their extremely impressive cd, the Dunoonpeeps team duly arranged to meet local band Maranchez.
Maranchez - the name is totally random - are, Tom Ramsay (Guitar), Nate Ramsay (Vocals), Brian Wilkins (Drums), and Gordy Crawford (Bass).
Maranchez was formed about 2 years ago. Brothers Tom and Nate are the songwriters for the band and have already written 25 songs, 16 of which are regularly played live. The band, with exception of Nate, were all in the band ‘Skin on Skin’.
When asked how they differed from Skin on Skin, the band explained that Skin on Skin had a more recognisably indie sound whereas Maranchez has added a much rockier edge.
They cite their influences as, amongst others, Pearl Jam, Thin Lizzie and even the Beatles.
Whilst acknowledging their influences, the band’s sound is purely unique and individual . The tight rhythm section, the guitar and the raw vocals combine to excite on all levels. During our meeting with the band we were struck by their passion for and commitment to their music. They were confident but neither brash nor big-headed, they were articulate and funny. Their music ability was outstanding and the songs memorable. They played three songs for us - Escaping the Past, Dust and Deliverance. The last one, Deliverance, which they hadn’t played for a while was so intense we insisted on hearing it twice.
Maranchez appear to be very together - no ego problems, no rivalries (sibling or otherwise) - just a strong commitment to maintain and extend their achievements. They now have access to rehearsal and recording facilities. Their CD - which we strongly recommend - is 14 tracks of excellent music. Whether rocking hard or emphasizing their musical qualities with their acclaimed acoustic set, Maranchez are extremely good. And getting better.
