DUNOONPEEPS REVIEW
At St. Mun’s Church Hall caring agencies including; Mariners, Choices Care, Cowal Carer's, the Link Club, Key Housing, Beechwood and Enable were brought together for the 2008 Christmas Ceilidh. Party goers this year were in for a special treat courtesy of Victor Sandall from P.A.C.C.T (People and Agencies of Cowal Coming Together). Victor engineered a fund raising scheme using a rather novel approach. Donations would be made to determine whether Victor was allowed to keep his beard, or whether he would have to shave it off. Now this might not sound like much of a sacrifice but Victor has been bearded for 15 years. In fact it's this signature beard that has earned Victor the nick names Santa Clause, Gandalf and Father Christmas.
The guests began to arrive as the staff and carer's busied themselves ensuring that everyone had snacks and beverages. Members of The Cowal Fiddle & Accordion Workshop setup and the hall quickly filled with the pleasing sounds of Christmas music and carols. Kirsty Tucker of the Argyll & Bute Council is the local area coordinator and assists individuals of varied abilities. Kirsty has been involved in this since June and currently provides services and supports to 4 different groups as well as individuals and families. Kirsty would like to see more events that focus on social inclusion and integration within the community. Today’s event found Kirsty quite busy maintaining the steady flow of snacks and beverages to the many revellers.
The job of Master of Ceremonies fell to none other than Ewan Hamilton. Ewan was quite at ease and a natural with the microphone as he both entertained and kept the event goers informed. That was until his winning raffle ticket was announced and he made a b-line to take his place in the queue at the prize table. Ewan also holds the position of treasurer for P.A.C.C.T. A position and responsibility which he takes quite seriously.
As four o-clock drew near heads were turning as everyone was looking to see where Victor was hiding as the fate of his beard was fast approaching. Victor arrived carrying the charity envelopes that contained the donations as well as the votes that would decide if Victor would walk away stroking his beard or rubbing his newly shaven chin. The anticipation was felt by all, especially when at the end of the vote it was determined that it was a stale mate. Victor was grinning like the Cheshire Cat as he thought he would soon walk away; beard intact. The audience however had other plans as shouts of "Take It Off" began to resonate throughout the hall. Victor tried in vain as he shouted "Keep It On" in return but his voice just could not be heard over the crowd as the chair was put in the centre of the room and Catherine MacIntyre, hairdresser from Aff Yer Heid took position with the tools of her trade. Catherine was kind enough to donate both her time and her services today to ensure that the will of the people was heard, and Victor would leave with his beard; in his hand. In the end Victor took his seat and with a single snip, it was all over. The crowd went wild, clapping & cheering and roaring with delight. Victor too was smiling as he held up his new souvenir for the crowd to see. Victor Sandall showed true sportsmanship and generosity with his rather unique approach to fund raising.
